Gutter Installation

Seamless aluminum gutters, leaders and gutter guards in Brick, NJ, installed with the roof edge in mind so water ends up away from the house.

Brick Roofing provides gutter installation in Brick, NJ, serving surrounding cities including Point Pleasant, Leisure Village East, Brielle, Point Pleasant Beach and Leisure Village. As roofers with 20+ years on shore homes, we treat gutters as the last part of the roof rather than an add-on, because how water leaves the roof edge decides whether it ends up in the yard or inside the walls.

A gutter only works when it sits correctly under the drip edge, slopes toward its outlets and empties into leaders that carry water away from the foundation. Get any of those wrong and the gutter overflows, pulls off the fascia or dumps water beside the basement. We plan all three together.

We install seamless aluminum gutters and leaders formed on site to each run, and gutter guards where the trees around the house make them worthwhile. The estimate lists gutters, leaders, guards and any fascia repairs as separate lines, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Seamless Aluminum Gutters

Formed on Site to Each Run

Seamless gutters are rolled from a coil of aluminum at the house, cut to the exact length of each roof edge. That removes the joints every few feet that sectional gutters rely on, which are the places where sealant fails and water drips onto walkways and foundations. The only seams left are at corners and end caps.

Because each piece is made for its run, the gutter fits the house rather than the house being made to fit standard lengths. Long eaves on ranches and split-levels, which are common across Brick, benefit most, since a single continuous gutter replaces several joints that would otherwise need resealing over the years.

Sizing for the Roof

A gutter has to carry the water from the roof area that drains into it. Steep roofs and large slopes send water off fast during a heavy rain, and an undersized gutter simply overflows. We look at the size and pitch of each slope, and where it drains, before choosing the gutter profile and the number of leaders.

Where a valley pours a concentrated stream into one corner, we add a leader near that point or fit a diverter so water does not shoot over the front of the gutter. Those small details matter during a nor’easter, when rain falls hard for hours at a time.

Color and Finish

Aluminum gutters come in a wide range of factory-baked finishes. We help you match the trim, the siding or a new roof, and bring samples to hold against the house in daylight. A matching finish on leaders and elbows keeps the whole system looking deliberate rather than added on afterward.

Fitting Gutters to the Roof Edge

Drip Edge and Fascia

The drip edge is the metal strip along the eaves that directs water off the roof into the gutter. Without it, or with a gutter hung too low, water clings to the edge of the shingles and runs behind the gutter onto the fascia. That rots the fascia, stains the siding and can soak into the soffit and wall.

Before installing gutters, we check the drip edge and the fascia board. Rotten fascia is replaced, a missing drip edge is added, and the gutter is set at the right height beneath it. That combination is what stops the water from running behind the gutter and into the wall.

Pitch Toward the Outlets

A gutter needs a slight, steady slope toward each outlet so water drains instead of sitting. Too flat and it holds standing water, debris and, in winter, ice. Too steep and it looks crooked on the house. We set the pitch carefully along each run and divide very long runs so they slope toward leaders at both ends.

Hangers and Fastening

Gutters full of water, wet leaves and sometimes ice are heavy. We fasten them with hidden hangers into the fascia and the rafter tails behind it at regular spacing, so the gutter holds its line and does not sag between supports or pull away during a storm.

Near the ocean, the bay and the rivers, salt air attacks ordinary steel screws and brackets. We use corrosion-resistant fasteners and hangers on coastal homes, so the hardware lasts as long as the aluminum it is holding up.

Leaders and Drainage

Placing the Downspouts

Leaders, or downspouts, carry water from the gutter to the ground. We place them where they can carry the water away from the house, avoiding walkways, driveways that freeze in winter and spots where water would run back toward the foundation. On larger homes, more leaders mean less water in each run.

Moving Water Away From the Foundation

Water that empties at the base of the wall soaks the ground right where the foundation and basement are. We add extensions, splash blocks or connections to drain lines so water ends up well away from the house, on ground that slopes away from it.

On low-lying lots and houses near lagoons, where the ground is already wet, getting roof water away from the house matters even more. We look at the grading around each leader location before deciding where it should discharge.

Gutter Guards

When Guards Make Sense

Houses under oaks, maples and pines fill their gutters several times a year, and a clogged gutter overflows exactly when it is needed most. Gutter guards cut down how often gutters need cleaning and reduce the chance of a blocked outlet during a heavy storm.

We recommend guards where the trees around the house justify the cost. On a house with no trees nearby, regular cleaning may be cheaper than guards, and we tell you so rather than adding them to every quote.

Choosing a Guard Type

Guards range from simple screens to fine mesh and solid covers that let water curl around the edge. Each handles different debris; fine mesh keeps out pine needles better than a coarse screen, for example. We explain how each type behaves with the trees around your house and what upkeep it still needs.

No guard makes a gutter completely maintenance-free. Debris can collect on top of some designs, and fine material can still settle inside. We set guards so they do not interfere with the shingles or the drip edge, and so they can be lifted for cleaning when needed.

Gutters at the Shore

Raised and Elevated Homes

Houses lifted after Sandy stand a full story higher, which puts the gutters well out of reach of an ordinary ladder. We plan ladder or lift access, staging and fall protection for the work, and list that access in the scope, so the job is priced for the real height of the house.

Ice and Snow at the Eaves

In winter, gutters can fill with ice when snow melts on the roof and refreezes at the cold edge. Heavy ice pulls gutters down and contributes to ice dams. Good attic ventilation and insulation reduce the problem at its source, and we look at both when ice-filled gutters have been an issue.

Combining Gutters With a New Roof

If the roof is being replaced, it is the best time to replace or reset the gutters. New drip edge, repaired fascia and new gutters can all be fitted together, and the crew cleans the yard and driveway at the end of each day, including a magnet sweep for loose nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose seamless gutters over sectional ones?

Sectional gutters are joined every few feet, and every joint is a place for sealant to fail and water to drip. Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on site to the length of each run, so the only joints are at the corners and the ends. Fewer joints means fewer leaks and less maintenance.

Should I replace my gutters when I replace my roof?

It often makes sense. The drip edge, the fascia and the gutter work as one system, and a new roof is the easiest time to correct a gutter that sits too low, a rotten fascia board or a missing drip edge. If the existing gutters are in good condition, we can reuse them and say so in the estimate.

Do gutter guards really work?

Good guards reduce how often gutters need cleaning, especially under trees, but no guard makes a gutter maintenance-free. Fine debris and pine needles can still build up on or in some designs. We recommend guards where the trees around the house justify them and explain what upkeep each type still needs.

Where should downspouts discharge?

Water from leaders should end up well away from the foundation, on ground that slopes away from the house or into an extension or drain line. Downspouts that empty against the foundation are a common cause of wet basements and crawlspaces. We plan leader locations with that in mind.

How long does gutter installation take?

Most single-family homes take a day or less, since seamless gutters are formed on site to the exact length. Fascia repairs, raised houses and very long runs can add time, and we tell you what to expect when we give you the estimate.

Can you install gutters on a raised house?

Yes. Gutters on houses lifted after Sandy sit a full story higher, so we plan ladder or lift access and fall protection as part of the job. That planning is in the written scope before the crew arrives.

What color options are there for aluminum gutters?

Seamless aluminum gutters come in a wide range of factory-finished colors, so they can match or contrast with the trim, the siding or the new roof. We bring samples so you can see the color against the house rather than choosing from a chart.
